Alexander Matrosov (1924-1943) was a Red Army infantryman who was posthumously named Hero of the Soviet Union for reportedly blocking a German machine gun with his body in February 1943. His act became a symbol of self-sacrifice in Soviet propaganda. His official biography is disputed: his name and birthplace may have been invented by him as a street child.
