Hiroo Onoda (1922-2014) was a second lieutenant in the Imperial Japanese Army, trained in intelligence work and guerrilla warfare. Sent to Lubang Island in the Philippines in 1944, he refused to believe the war was over and kept fighting in the mountains for nearly 29 years. He only surrendered in March 1974, after his former commander travelled to relieve him of his orders.
