Hiroshi Funasaka (1920-2006) was a sergeant in the Imperial Japanese Army who led a grenade-launcher squad of the 59th Infantry Regiment on Angaur in the Palau Islands in 1944. Japanese accounts describe him fighting on despite some two dozen wounds and finally attacking an American command post alone. He survived, was captured, and after the war founded a Tokyo bookshop.
