Captain Michiro Okuyama led the Giretsu Kuteitai ("Heroic Paratroopers"), a Japanese army commando unit formed from airborne troops. He commanded the engineer company of the brigade and was trained in sabotage and demolition. In May 1945 his unit attacked Yontan airfield on Okinawa to destroy American aircraft, and the raiders were killed.
