Sergei Zimin (1907-1943) was a collective-farm chairman who volunteered for the Red Army in 1941 despite being exempt. He fought at Moscow and Stalingrad and became a squad leader of a guards rifle regiment. In March 1943 at Taranovka near Kharkiv his squad fought at a railway crossing; he blew up a tank with grenades and was killed in doing so. He was posthumously named Hero of the Soviet Union.
