Shōichi Yokoi (1915-1997) was a tailor by trade and a sergeant in the Imperial Japanese Army. After the American recapture of Guam in 1944 he hid in a cave in the jungle for almost 28 years. He was found by local men on 24 January 1972 and returned to Japan, where his story drew wide public attention.
