Stepan Averyanov (1909-1970) was a Red Army machine-gun crew commander who had already served as a sniper-scout in the Winter War against Finland. Called up again in 1941, he was wounded and concussed when his unit was encircled in August 1941. He fought on with the 1st Belorussian Front and was named Hero of the Soviet Union in 1945.
