Viktor Karandakov (1914-1981) was a Red Army sapper from Armavir. In July 1941, in the fighting against Finnish troops north of Sortavala, he and four comrades stopped several counterattacks with machine-gun fire and carried a wounded company commander to safety. For this he was named Hero of the Soviet Union in 1941.
